  18. <p>     In Connecticut's Gun Valley, the deal was a godsend. To
  19. preserve 1,000 local jobs, state treasurer Francisco Borges said
  20. last month that Connecticut would participate in the buyout of
  21. Colt Firearms by purchasing a 47% stake in the company for $25
  22. million. But the state has bought into a moral dilemma. Next
  23. month Colt will begin producing the Sporter, a gun similar to
  24. the AR-15, an assault rifle the company quit producing because
  25. of its use by drug traffickers. Colt contends that the Sporter
  26. will not be fully automatic, and therefore is not an assault
  27. rifle.

  29. <p>     Since sentiment in the state legislature is running strongly
  30. toward banning such weaponry, Borges plans to examine Colt's
  31. gun. If it is deemed an assault weapon, he plans to block its
  32. production. "I will exercise every option available as a
  33. significant shareholder," says he. "Assault rifles for civilian
  34. consumers have no place."
